Exclusive Interview with RH Bless

For those who don’t know you yet, can you introduce yourself?
My name is R.H.Bless. I'm from Brooklyn. Block Exchange is the name of my crew and movement.
How long have you been in the game?
I've been in the game since 1995 touring with notable artists of that time and doing road management duties. I did my first artist introduction into the game in 1998 on a project that was released in the UK.
What makes RH Bless stand out in the industry?
The fact I maintain my integrity as an emcee and my passion as an artist and put that into my music each and every time makes me a stand out. Also due to the fact that I am more than just an emcee, I am an entity, a producer, director, editor, CEO, an entrepreneur, more attention is aroused due to my diverse abilities. In everything that I do it becomes clear that one, I love this music and what I do, and two, that I take it very seriously. People take notice to what's true. I am one of the true ones.
Is there any upcoming local talents we should look up to?
I would reccommend looking out for Push Montana, St. Laz, Duss Smitoooo, Cess Wonder and Chippa Blue to name a few of the artist I support and co-sign hard. It's a new wave of a new breed of artist. Keep your ears to the streets.
If it wasn’t music, what else would you have loved to do?
I've always loved music so I can't really fathom the idea of not having music involved on my life somewhere somehow. I've always had a business mind so I would be a business owner of some sort. Entrepreneur. I'm a creator not an assembly line worker. I've always wanted to own my own. I should of gone to film school too. Still may. Part of me also had an interest in criminal forensics. Maybe another lifetime.
In the current state of the music industry, would you recommend going independent?
Independent is the only way to remain or to start off sound with some sort of a self built foundation. Artists have yo build themselves from the ground up because labels are not willing to do that anymore. It's too much of a financial risk for them these days. Artists have to create their own buzz and establish their own fan base and following before any label will even take a meeting with them. Few label nurture and help their artists grow. That's why the music they release pales in comparison to the music I grew up listening to. By way of independence you create your own path and destiny. Let the labels meet us half way or come to us.
Who are some of your biggest influences?
My mother, for her independent strength. My grandmother, for her perseverance and belief in a better day. My son, for his shaping mind and the idea that everything that I do in my life is going to influence what he sees as being responsible, successful, strong, a man, etc, so every move I make I'd crucial. My cousin for helping me learn how to take what's in my heart and turn it into art for the world to see. Everyone still in the struggle striving for something more than what we were given or expected to ever have. The warriors.
What’s your best moment performing live?
On Riker's Island Correctional Facility. Seeing that some of the most difficult brothers to reach were actually listening to every word of what my songs were saying, and then stood to their feet to give an applause had me in awe. Unbelievable moment. More than words can say.
In what country would you love to perform, that you haven’t been to yet?
Any country in Africa where hip hop is strong. Japan. Or any other Asian country where hip hop is popping.
How long does it take you to record a whole project?
It all depends on my creative energy. Some projects were done in days to a week. Some others took a bit longer. Waiting for verses and participation from artists appearing on these projects can prolong and contribute to the delay.
What’s your biggest accomplishment ‘til this day?
I have many big ones not limited to music. Being a great father to my son is one. Overcoming every obstacle in life ever put before me is another. Music wise, building and establishing a strong and respected brand of integrity and true artistry through my Block Exchange imprint. Going from having no voice to having a voice that is to be reckoned with. Also making great connections with good people in my field of interest to help my path to success be a little less course
Your top 5 rappers?
No particular order:
Rakim. Big Daddy Kane. Kool G Rap. KRS-One. Shabazz The Disciple.
Your top 5 producers?
No particular order:
Dr Dre. Dj Premier. Kanye West. Rza. Swizz Beats.
Your top 5 sneakers?
No particular order:
All white Uptowns(AF1). Or all black. Bugs Bunny Jordans. Nike Hirachis. Probably spelled that wrong. Low top New Balance. Last but not least my all black or classic tan suede timbs. Yea I know they're not sneakers but I wear them like sneakers!
Can you give some advice to upcoming rappers, and the next generation of artists?
Figure out and then know who you are on the microphone. Don't waste time and take it serious. Stay free from boxes that people will try to put you into and stay true and as passionate as you possibly can. Hustle and pray.
What’s next for RH Bless in 2010?
Continue my relentless grind and keep putting out good music. Good video and film work. It's more serious and intense this year coming. We are trying to make and leave a footprint in hip hop forever like the great ones before us. God said so.
Any shout outs?
To everyone who still loves true hip hop, support true hip hop. A new wave is here. Expose yourself to it then expose it. Block Exchange. Brooklyn. All the supporters. Much appreciated. I thank you.
