The Importance of Hiring a PR Team At The Right Time
Hiring a pr team at the right time is crucial to the success of your campaign.
Here’s a typical scenario, the band or solo artist spends months in the studio working on a new record- Once they are ready to release the record, they realize they didn’t set aside any funds to promotion. They decide to contact a pr team to jump on the project (last minute), they rush the campaign, and then blame the pr team for not getting them the prime time coverage they expected.
Really?
Here’s a reality check: You are a new artist, you are probably known among your friends and family, and at most by 100s of people in your hometown- You probably have minimal coverage and no track record-
Another element to consider, the press receives 1,000 of emails daily from bands and artists doing their own pr, and pitching them the wrong way. On top of that, they are covering label artists + festivals/ concerts happening that month. It can take anywhere between 1 day to 1 week to even hear back from them- Now, let’s imagine you retain the pr agency a month before your release date, how much time did you really set aside to the success of the promotion for this record?
Again, publicists are not miracle workers. And even if we do secure coverage, we need to give the writer ample time to listen to the 13 songs on your album and review them. So how many weeks should we really set aside between the time we reach out to them? The time they review? And your release date?
When you decide to spend months in the studio to have the “perfect” record, and spend thousands of dollars on studio equipment, plus hiring the right engineers to mix and master your record; You should also contact a publicist to start a pr campaign for you while you are in the studio many months in advance of the album release date. So that by the time the album comes out, there is a lot of awareness around you and the project.
Be fair and bring a PR team at the right time, and give them the room to actually work your record-
